Our name carries generations

This is our origin story.

Our Name Has Meaning

Before it was a firm, Against the Current was a calling—shaped by rivers, responsibilities, and relationships. It was born from the union of two Peoples, two lineages, and two waters moving in powerful, purposeful directions.

Our name holds deep meaning. It carries the story of the Umóⁿ’hoⁿ people, whose migration upstream along the Missouri River gave rise to a name—Omaha, “those who go against the current.”

It honors the Tapa (Deer) Clan, spiritual stewards and peacekeepers of the Sky People—keepers of the pipe, carriers of ceremony.

Two Waters, One Story

It also carries the blood memory of the Diné, whose clan system binds generations across land, story, and ceremony.

Our founder, Eddie Sherman (Diné | Umóⁿ’hoⁿ), is Tachiiʼnii—Red Streak Running Into Water—a name that evokes sacred movement, the lifeforce of water, and the beauty of transformation.

These aren’t just ancestral lineages. They are instructions.

Our Instructions

Instructions to lead with Responsibility—to our People, to the land, and to those yet to come.

>> To center Relationship, because nothing sacred is done alone.

>> To move in Reciprocity, sharing power and knowledge without hoarding.

>> To practice Redistribution, ensuring resources flow where they’ve been withheld.

>> And to live with Respect, for all ways of knowing, being, and becoming.

Why we exist

Against the Current Consulting was created in 2013 not to fit into systems, but to challenge and transform them. We are a Native-owned and -led firm that partners with Indigenous and communities of color to reclaim narrative, shift power, and co-create strategies rooted in cultural fluency and political clarity.

We don’t work on behalf of communities—we work with them, alongside them, and accountable to them.
